i'm not a canal freak lol but i do know a sluice!
anyway update, they do open up i was just scared to force them round!
so i now have water passing valve to pump, i think the pump's going to work now, just have to cure this pesky leak from pump/valve nut which is what got me into this mess in the first place!
thought it would be sorted with new rubber washer and a bit of ptfe tape but alas no......
