Gemini Oil boiler approx 10-14 yrs old. Intermittently fails, won't fire up after switching illuminated button. We turn system off and on again (from when it has failed and up to 12 hrs later) and it may or may not start up - frustratingly engineer is called and and then its working again. Have bled radiators, added noise reducer and inhibitor, adjusted air control. No joy. Help!

Has this one got a Riello burner, do you know?
John :)
Hello John, thanks for your reply but unfortunately I don't know if it has a Riello burner and I can't see anything in the info I've got about it to tell me either. The boiler went off for an hour and a half this morning after 3 hours running, came on again for about an hour. Kept trying to restart it during the times it went off. One thing is that the flow seems slow from the drain cock but maybe this is normal.

OK forget about bleeding radiators etc - the burner is going to lockout because the oil flame is being extinguished for some reason.
As it seems to have some sort of relationship with heat I would suggest that the coil, sitting on the oil pump, is starting to fail...this electrically switches the oil on and keeps it there so long as flame is established. This is one of the more common problems that burners suffer from.
I don't think its a good idea to adjust the air door setting as this could have a detrimental effect on things.
Ideally the boiler needs to have a gas analysis done to set it up correctly.

PS the burner unit will have a plate on it somewhere with the make and model on. J :)

Hi John, thank you very much for your suggestion and it may be that the coil is the cause of the problem. We hear a humming noise while the boiler is struggling to light just before it cuts off which would seem consistent with your theory. We'll get somebody out to look at it and just want to say thanks again, Karen

Its a bit difficult to explain this but can you tell if the motor is actually spinning? If a device called a capacitor fails (clipped to the side of the motor) the motor doesn't know which way to spin...I just don't want you to chuck loads of cash at the thing without proper diagnostics.
Hope you can get someone out pronto!
John :)
