I recently bought a house and the basement has a smell of damp without any obvious source.

The survey did mention dampness but didn't declare it anything to worry about. However, I'd like to do some further investigation to find out the source and get it sorted as we are going to rent out the basement.

Where to start - call in a surveyor? Specialist damp proofers? Builder?

cheers.

@ a guess, I`d say any wall/floor in contact with the earth is likely to be damp ....basements usually aren`t "tanked" due to cost....when they are, they`re called Garden Flats

agree with nige f, you will need to get in touch with a firm that specializes in tanking. it's perfectly natural, for an untreated space below ground, to smell of damp.
