get rid of spotlights in the ceiling without replastering ??

We have a bedroom which is a converted loft (done by previous owners) It has way too many spot halogen lights in the ceiling - every time I go to bed I feel like I'm looking up at a run way.

Is there any way of getting rid of them and patching the holes or would be have to replastering the whole lot?

If it's plasterboard it should be fairly easy to patch the holes then give everything a coat of paint.

ok thanks - so how would I patch them up - would I have to cut circular bits of plasterboard to fit? or is there another way?

Dimmer switch and LED bulbs perhaps might be an easier solution?
