I have fitted a few windows in the past and the glass normally
says fit this side internally, can somebody tell me why it is so?

Presumably because it is Heat reflective' 'tis treated on one side only.

Low E reflective coating to the internal leaf for maximum efficiency. Although it wont fail building control sign off the wrong way around.
Actually when fitting obscure glass I deliberately fit it the wrong way for several reasons:
1. better water proofing, Rubber gaskets will seal better to flat glass.
2. rough glass externally gets dirtier and is harder to clean.
3. with the clear pane externally all the windows look and reflect the same from outside so looks smarter IMO
