My woodwork in the hall, stairs and landing is currently a gloss finish which I don't like. I am planning on changing to a satinwood or egg shell finish that I have used elsewhere in the house but I am a bit concerned about the staircase spindles and banister. Is satinwood hard wearing enough to use on a banister and spindles (there are children in the house!) - I was thinking of using satinwood for door frames, skirts etc but using gloss on the banister but this may look odd, any suggestions on best approach appreciated.

Any oil based paint is tough. Satinwood is fine. The bannister will actually go shinier with use anyway.

Gloss or satinwood are great, but dont use the eggshell, its a lovely finish but its just not durable. Finger marks will go into the grain of the paint and are difficult to get out.

I would use eggshell, and if you use the new Dulux c**p stuff it will come out looking like gloss anyway.

I discovered Satinwood years ago, I hate gloss with, it takes forever to dry and the quick drying stuff is sh+te. Satin, satin, satin!
