In the process of fitting an intruder alarm in the house we have just purchased. Is it a wise idea to fit a PIR in the garage looking at the rear garage door (this doesnt get much sun) or woule it just be better sticking with a door contact on the back door and garage door. The alarm is a honeywell acenta G4 kit.

Thnks in advance.

Forget the PIR, not a good idea for that type of environment.

Have a look for a DT (Dual-Tec) - two different detectors in the one unit - a PIR & a Microwave, what upsets one does not upset the other, they both have to be in an an alarm condition at the same time to trip the panel, much more stable than a PIR.

If you go for the dual tec, the microwave part will have distance settings via links or an adjustable pot on the pcb. Make sure this is set to less distance that the area it is covering , as the microwave will see past the door. This should be explained in the fitting instructions.
