Greener heating systems (sense at last!)

Up here in bonnie Scotland, the Scottish Government has done at least something right. Put a hold on its plan to force people down the heat pump route. Member of parliament talking sense, saying the proposed legislation had the potential to put unreasonable financial burden on people.

Mind you, we have elections here in 2026. If Scottish Labour get in, Milliband will no doubt do all he can to influence them to reintroduce it.

I mainly like the principle of how it works. That in some situations you can heat your house using energy from outside even when it is minus ten is really cool (no pun intended).
 
Houses of Parliament are grade 1 listed …..not exactly representative of British homes

It's just an old building. Millions of houses in UK are also old buildings, some listed. One of the reasons they rejected ASHPs was the noise. This will be a problem whatever the age of the building that has one of these systems installed.

The crux of the matter is that they found that ASHPs weren't the ideal solution for their own environment, ie. Houses Of Parliament - but they are perfectly prepared to force others to have ASHP systems that are far from ideal for them.

You can’t heat building for free at minus 10

All calculations are done at -3

The rule of thumb is, can you heat your house with a maximum flow temp of 50 degrees. And most can’t

Thanks. I was vaguely aware there are issues, but not in detail. My main interest, though, was in the principle. I found it surprisingly hard to find a decent graph of efficiency vs outside temperature. But I finally got one!

There’s a website that shows peiole running Ashp’s. It shows how effective they really are.

I was taking to my Mitsubishi rep this morning. 9/10 faults are caused by system issues and poor installation.

That said, theres no way my house could me kept warm by one when it’s zero or below.

I've just remembered something I read last year. Apparently, you could easily fix the winter problem just by fitting a bigger ASHP. But then it wouldn't run efficiently in the warmer months. There is a sweet spot for efficiency of about 50% output, IIRC.
 
I do feel a bit sorry for those who 'do the right thing' based on pressure from government and tree huggers, they've bought the EV, got the heat pump etc, only for government to say 'you know how we were going to mandate 2030 for all of this to be done, well ...'
