gripper rods on stairs

Hello

Any advice on where to place gripper rods on the staircase. I know to leave 1.5 - 2cm from the edge but does it go on all edges or just the long edge (horizontal and vertical)?

And does the underlay just cover the horizontal step area and around the nosing? Many thanks
