I try to use these grips along with an adjustable in different situations but find that they always slip. Is this not a very good brand or am I misusing it?

Alternatively, what do you recommend in its place?

Hard to know if you’re using them incorrectly. Could be poor type. I use Knipex, but also depends on what I’m working on. Maybe you could use vice/mole grips if you can? Or maybe 2 adjustable spanners?

Any chance you've dropped them (/used them as a hammer) one too many times and dented the rim around the silver button, preventing it from popping all the way back up and as a result it isn't gripping the teeth in the adjustment slot properly?

Can't help but notice your button seems stuck down compared to the pic of a new set off tool stations website:

The rothenberger equivalent I own have been incredibly reliable..

I’ve seen an auto-adjusting Rothenberger one too. Are they any good?

Is that this one?

I don't mind paying a bit more for something that will last and do a good job.
No, mine are more like yours with a button and a fine tooth adjustment routine. Those "open as far as you can and then you can slide to adjust" are typically more coarse in their adjustability. I have that type too, but prefer the button one

Have you tried seeing if you can get the button to pop up more?

(By that JP means turn the grips round so that the "fingers" of the grips point to the right when loosening and the left when tightening)
