We have a joist which needs replacing in a ground floor which has a cavity underneath. How to do this.please

Tells us a bit about your project......
Have you exposed the entire joist along its length?
Is it a rot problem you have - and if it is, could there be more than one joist affected?
John :)

Where is the joist (e.g. nearest the wall at one end), what is wrong with it and how is it supported? Basically if you really do need to replace a joist you'll need to cut a track out of the floor between the joists either side of the defective one to gain access to the area s you can work on it. What you then discover in terms of how the joint is supported will probably dictate the method of replacement
