Where I have cut tiles to fit around a socket, should I grout in the gaps or use some silicone selant instead (it's waterproof grout).

...or both ?

That sounds a right mess.
I would have loosened the socket front & tiled up to the edge of the metal back box. Much neater.

I guess sealant will make it look nicer ?

If you have to silicone up to something that will one day have to come out (like your socket) you can wrap the thing in cling-film first. Then the silicone will stick to the film, which you can remove, without gluing the socket into place.

You can loosen the socket fixing screws to get the film round it.
