`my builder is suggesting using GRP valleys rather than lead. I want a solid structure for my extension - lasting well into the next century - should i stick to lead?

If you really want it to last at least 89 years then lead is the way to go. Do you intend living that long? Comes with price though of course. Its nice to have lead buy really though there's nowt wrong with GRP if its installed correctly.
