Hi,

Just had a corgi engineer to quote, haven't received cost yet but a few things he said worried me. The boiler is going into an out-house and he stated he would run the condensate 4 meters along a step outside into a rain water only drain, hardly any fall and also in 22mm overflow pipe (freezing??). I questioned it and he says it goes to a soakaway anyway. He refused to connect to my soil stack which is 8 meters away under floorboards. Never mentioned a condensate pump.

I also the calculated gas pipe size is about 15 meters including the bends, he agreed and he says he will pipe this is in 22mm. The boiler is a ferolli 30kw and said he only fits this one boiler and wouldn't allow me to pick a different one or to buy my own - do you normally get a choice? He also didn't check whether i had a gas fire, gas hob.

Do you normally have to ask for them to take muddy shoes off so they don't wreck your cream carpets? I was scared to if i'm honest. I feel very unsure about things. I was nervous before hand as it was.

I'm worried now and would like advice.

Get another quote if you didn't like the installer.

Of course you can have what boiler you choose. He who pays the piper......................

I am always suspicious about installers who only know how to fit one make.

I can fit any make but would only refuse to fit a Saunier Duval because of their attitude towards installers, premium rate calls and bad tech help!

My advice is to get some ideas of the boilers you would like and get some professional installers who wil fit any make for you to give you an idea of the price, not necessarily with a site visit.

I would expect 15 m of 22 mm will be very marginal to give less than 1 mB of pressure drop !!! It would need very careful measurement and assessment. It would be unlikely to stop it from working juat a rather technical non compliance with standards which would excite any CORGI inspector!

Practical pressure drops are usually about 20% higher than the theoretical as a result of roughness at fittings and solder blobs etc!

Condensate pipe at 22 mm must be insulated outdoors. It should only be put into an existing soakaway after a lime Ph neutraliser.

Well the rain water drain is properly drained not a soakaway and i told him this but he didn't listen. At least the other installer i have coming to quote was more talkative on the phone and generally left me with more confidence.

It's worrying.

Why not call Chris Hutt ?

He would be too fearful of anything bad you might say on a forum to do anything other than a perfect job for you!

Of course with his second job as a Publicity Officer he might be too busy!

Well I emailed him a couple of weeks ago and got no response

adwt he sounds like the sort of guy nobody would want. Get some more quotes. If someone wants to give a rough quote over the phone, ask what they would do about the boiler/pipes freezing, the condensate pipe and destination, and anything else.
If you ask about gas pipe sizing you should get the sort of answers you have here. I wouldn't be happy with a mere 20% oversizing, more like 60%!
Ask what they do about cleaning the system, too - plenty here if you search.

Thanks for the advice, somebody else is coming tomorrow evening, hopefully will be more positive. People like that give a bad name to everyone else, I read about it on ere but never expected to experience it!

I think Chris H changed his email some while ago.

Try finding his telephone number and call him.

At least he is the best installer we know in bristol !

I wouldn't run any condensate pipe outside in anything less than 32mm.
I cant wait for a decent freeze so that I can laugh at all the cowboy jobs when the overflow pipes all freeze up.

Maybe he wants to max out on the £50 installers cashback offer

Well whatever he quotes he won't be coming into my house again!

you can do a search for chrishutt, then scroll down till you see his name, click on that and you get his email.

Alternative my email is in my profile and I can pass it on.
