I have a row of 3 halogen lights in my kitchen (off a single fixture) which have stopped working. It's not the bulbs - I tried changing them all. Would this be a fault with the transformer. is this something I could replace myself? I went to homebase today but they don't sell them; is that because its not a DIY job?

If it is, indeed a 12V setup, the transformer is a good bet, but when you say 'fixture' is this a rack of lights on the wall or ceiling? If so, forget about replacing parts - it will be cheaper to replace the whole thing. But before you do that it's possible that the problem is with the circuit. If you don't have the means or know-how to test whether or not your circuit is intact you could spend a lot of time trying things out to no avail. You might want to consider calling in an electrician.

Emma,

If you have changed all the bulbs then it can really only be the transformer or the power to it. Test the supply and if it is ok then your transformer is bust !

If the other lights in the kitchen (6 halogen downlighters in the ceiling each with their own transformer) are working, does that mean that the circuit is OK?
The three that aren't working are a rack of lamps attached to a wall at the far end of the kitchen where there was no roof/ceiling space to install downlighters.

Check all the terminals are tight (i.e. nothing has come loose anywhere).

Not necessarily. As mentioned before the transformer is a likely candidate (if the rack is, in fact, an ELV set) but from your replies it seems you're not able to confirm this. If you don't understand how to test your lighting get somebody in to check it out for you - there are no other sensible options.
