can anyone give me some advice on picture hanging

Light duty stuff? Knock the panel pin / picture nail in at an angle downwards...it will hold well enough in plaster or plasterboard.
For heavier stuff you may need the odd rawlplug and screw, or cavity fixings if your walls are dry lined.

Go to a diy place & buy picture hooks, you will get a packet of about 6 for about a £1.

Panel pins, come in all sizes & you will get hundreds for a £1.
