I bought a Hansgrohe iBox from a seller who claimed it was brand new and never used—just something they bought for a project and didn’t end up installing. It was described as dusty from being in storage, which I was fine with.

When it arrived, I wasn’t totally sure what a brand-new unit should look like. It came with two 22mm compression nuts with olives and two 15mm nuts with olives, but the 22mm nuts have a hardened, putty-like material on them—not in the threads, but toward the back of the nuts. I’ve attached photos.

I also noticed the same putty/compound around the fittings where they exit the green box. This made me wonder: are these normally supplied unassembled, and maybe the seller assembled it themselves? If so, why would there be compound on a couple of the nuts as well?

I’m a bit concerned. I don’t mind if it was partially assembled, but I want to avoid any risk of leaks or the possibility that it was used and sold as new.

Any advice or insight would be appreciated. Photos attached.

Thanks

Watching some iBox installation videos I can see that this does indeed come unassembled so the previous person definitely assembled it. But since the olives and everything is fine I don’t think they installed it fully. But question would be how good is that fitting since it has some sort of putty/compound where the manual calls for ptfe I think. Should I return and not risk it?

Looking at another eBay listing picture attached. It looks like it’s supposed to be like this pic. So it appears the seller has put some sort of compound in the thread and tightened it and excess just weeped out and is visible. But that black rubber seems like a grommet between the greeen housing and the main brass fitting. So I think as long as compound is correct stuff and that nut that’s been compounded was definitely tightened then maybe should be ok? Maybe I should just ask for partial refund for being second hand ?

Update on this - I decided to return it just not happy with what I paid for a used item. Plus it’s also missing the tanking membrane that’s supposed to be included.
