Hi, am new to DIY (and this forum) and am doing some decorating and repairs around the house. My bedroom floor is creaking. I removed the carpet to reveal a hardboard covering. When I remove the hardboard panels I found that the floorboards themselves are not creaking but of course they are uneven which is no good to lay my new carpet on top of. Can anybody suggest how I can fix the squeaking that the hardboard covering seems to be causing?

swap to plywood and use ring shank nails or screws to hold in place.
