I had always intended laying hardboard over the floorboards prior to getting my landing carpeted. The floorboards are in pretty good shape but I will run a plane over them to take out any high spots. My question is, is there any advantage to laying hardboard if I am going to have a good quality underlay and carpet laid?

I lay hardboard and seal the edges with mastic it cuts down drafts and dirty edges to the carpet where they blow through.

I wouldn't bother. If anything lay plywood. But a good underlay and it's not needed
