When you did the install did you create a new partition and format it? Have you loaded the correct drivers for display etc or is it using default Windows drivers (which is probably the issue here)?

Yes to to first question deleted then loaded onto a new partition,
But not sure about the driver being the default!! I simply
followed the download instructions but cant recall any reference
to setting driver :?: can I change this if so help please!!

Like kbidy, I think this is probably because you do not have the correct drivers installed for your graphics card.

Try to find out what make your graphics card is -- if you don't know, and you are happy to open the case, you can have a look at the label on the card. You might otherwise find out from any documentation that came with the PC, or perhaps even a sticker on the case somewhere.

If all else fails, there is a way to do it here: http://superuser.com/questions/184803/tool-to-find-out-which-video-card-is-installed-on-my-system

You can then download drivers quite easily from the manufacturers. The most popular ones are Nvidia, ATI and Intel, and a quick web search should turn up the right site.

To find out your display driver you can look in 'Device Manager' under the Properties in My computer. Alternatively you could download Belarc Advisor http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html which will run a full check on all devices and you can then search the web for the correct drivers

Hi thanks for your input, I agree with your point re drivers
the problem is that the fault in in a oldish HP unit that is
used solely by the wife for card design, and is not online
as I only have virus protection for the pc I am currenly
using!! the problem ocured when a graphics cd was downloaded
and I suspect this contained a virus :?: but not being online
with protection I had no warning.
Anyway! I thought I might get a refurbished laptop to replace
the HP as the processer must be out of the Ark it's so slow
and set up the replacement online with Norton cover
Thanks again for your help ( we live & learn )
