Harvey Water softener Compatible salt

I have a 14-year old softener with rectangular shape salt. A while ago I did consider updating the softener for the newer Mini Arc but couldn't find anyone else that supplied salt in that shape so didn't switch. I haven't looked recently but there might be someone out there now.
Yes due to the shape of the blocks, I cannot just buy any rectangular blocks. I could break it up into pieces and put in that. I was wondering if water softener tablets or pellets will do the same job?
