I have used this stuff for years and always lauded the fact that you apply the filler over filler and sand it back with superior feathering.

The last tub I purchased was the 25% free one.

I filled, sanded and then decided to refill low spots on a badly plastered wall. I didn't pre-prime as I have never needed to in the past.

This time I discovered that I could not feather the last coat. It now reacts with the previous coat and leaves a skin (similar to a coat of pva).

has anyone else noticed this. I might as well buy the cheaper Mangers stuff if that is the case.

I have a tub of the 25% free as well but have not noticed any difference.
I will be doing a lot of filler on filler tomorrow on some botched walls so shall soon notice if there is a problem.

I gave the red devil a thorough workout today and had mostly good results.
The only time I had a problem was on the room's north facing wall which I found to be very cold to the touch, and may have been below the specified 10 degrees c. The filler didnt seem to adhere very well at all unless it was on previously painted areas.

Could temperature be the problem where you are opps?

Hi Dean

The wall was an exterior on but having re-read my post I now realise that I wasn't as clear as I could have been.

The feathering issue to which i referred was in relation to sanding rather than application.

In the past when sanding OneTime it hasn't mattered if I am sanding thru 1 layer of filler or 5. This time however, when sanding the top layer and hitting the second layer I hit a very thin skin that has PVA like properties- ie it can't be sanded (only abraded off). the upshot is that the feathering of the top layer is far from perfect, leaving a very slight ridge where it meets the lower layer.
