I could have said police van, but that is what they are known as round here.

I don't know the origin of the word.

Oh I see, you live in Cheshire so they are 'white' Mariahs.
As a kid in Liverpool they were 'Black' Mariahs, hence the question.
Nowadays they are blue and yellow chequered and called riot vans!

Both forces have both types of van, although strictly speaking, I think the dark ones are a dark blue, not black.
