Having stair spindles dipped

Hi Guys

I would like to have the spindles on my staircase dipped but before removing I wondered is there a good way of marking the spindles so that I know which one goes where as I expect they will all be a little different.

Perhaps a number stamp used on the end of the spindle?
Or just a series of starter holes in a pattern

Chances are there are less than 20

Hole patterns sound like good idea I have 40 spindles to have dipped but some are from the landing so prob wont need to mark those.

When I built my stairs, I think I cut them in small batches so you may not need to identify them if they turn out to be same size . Just dry fit before fixing
