I would like to convert my stairs from the present metal spirals I have inherited to a standard spindle staircase. I am a novice when it comes to stairs but I know the basics of DIY - is this a job I could take on? In your opinion what level of skill is required for this kind of job? If it is possible, where is the best place to buy all the bits (spindles, newel posts, handrail etc etc)?

All comments appreciated

Many thanks in advance

John

PS hopefully I have managed to upload pics of my current staircase and the type of design I am looking to achieve (albeit I would ideally like slightly different spindles and newel posts i.e. rounded rather than the squares in the pics).

I am total novice too and have taken on a similar task. I bought stair part from Jackson wood turners and were cheaper than others and their delivery charge was more than reasonable. you will need a mitre saw some sharp chisel and an adjustable right angle measurer. the parts were fairly easy to get together. although taking time getting things measured will etc will save time in the long run. give it a go. I'm glad I did.
