Heat exchanger

Why do heat exchangers pinhole? i have a potterton performa and it has a tiny leak. not a massive problem at the moment, but it will need replacing.

why does it happen though. the boiler is 4 1/2 yrs old.

is it due to not enough inhibitor. it is a big house with 13 rads on it.

not sure really, but i was there when it was serviced this week. it was in the middle of the unit. i think it is the main HE. it had green slim covering it on the right side. looks like not a huge amount of water is coming through as the tenants have only had to top up the boiler twice in the 1 1/2 yrs they have been there.

Sounds more like the o-ring seal from your description. Very rare for main H/E to pinhole.
Now secondary H/E's...
Would suggest whoever you get to do it brings along pump o-rings as well!
