My wife want me to replace the existing bathroom radiator with a towel radiator but she wants the new towel radiator to heat up when the hot water is turned on without the central heating.
How does this work?

then you have a combi so you can't do it

well you sort of can, if you get a potable rad

dont laugh I have had to do this on a combi for a total git of a client

They cost him 600 a pop :)

Thanks for your help gents.

By potable rads you mean connect in to the hot water distribution pipe so that your domestic hot water travels through your radiator first?

An all-brass towelrail cleaned and disinfected ........like you do for Legionella

Quite apart from losing 5-10°C the real downside of doing that with a tower rail on a combi is that you have to draw off about 10 litres before it becomes somewhat hot at the tap.

Apart from the waste of water there is the question of a one minute wait for hot water !

Thanks again chaps for all the good information.
I did think about the dead leg water wastage.
She'll have to make do with it only working when the central is on.

Why not get a dual fuel towel radiator.
Your missus can then have nice warm/dry towels in the summer when the heating is off.

HTR immersion heater in the bottom of one leg of the towel rail works perfectly well! Only 200 watts or so.
But does need supply spur and switch OUTSIDE the bathroom.
