Heat pump installation costs

We had quite a few quotes before embarking on our installation in our [badly insulated] house a couple of years back. A few of these companies offered the ‘premium’ option of the vaillant, or something like the ecodan or in one case a clivet rebadged midea, at a cheaper price.

The company we went for were the ones who offered the clivet and this was over 2k cheaper than the vaillant offering. My one regret is that I didn’t enquire at the time how much it would have been just to get a midea as their comparative unit is generally around 1k cheaper than the clivet….

Anyway since installation I’ve gone down a bit of a rabbit hole with it, designing my own controls and monitoring using home assistant. I’ve tweaked a few bits of the physical install side as well, and I also peruse various ashp forums regularly and have read up a lot about them and various units people have installed, and issues that crop up. I did a lot of research beforehand but I certainly know a lot more now about them, than I did.

As said the Bosch is or at least was a midea underneath so you’d be paying a premium to have a Bosch warranty rather than midea- the benefits of which might not warrant the price difference. I assume most people wouldn’t know this and think they are getting a Bosch engineered product when they are not.

The vaillant- it’s expensive, and I’ve also seen more complaints about them (noise being a big one for the 7kW unit) than I ever have about the midea. In fact the only complaint I have seen about the midea is that the controls aren’t the easiest but I think these might have been updated now to be a bit more user friendly. And there’s a lot of midea owners out there. There are equally a lot of people happy with their vaillants.

Efficiency wise they are all very similar so you’re not gaining anything there. It then comes down to considering aftercare and warranties (and assumption perhaps that vaillant might be better), and of course the controls. Is this worth paying an extra 2-3k for? I thought probably not.

Our install now works well by the way and I’d recommend them in general- if the price is right as you say.
 
Personally i would ask around with what a heat pump cost to run. I would only be installing it if i was saving money on gas or electric. Quite often a heat pump is top up with another fuel, IE: electric. This will always be the most expletive fuel as it needs gas/oil/coal to produce it. So, at the moment i am not convinced on them. Also, if you want a grant, you often have to have other green credentials, like very good insulation & solar panels.

Yes it is - when installed as the house is constructed. But in an existing house it requires all the floors to be dug up and then relaid and most people don't want this sort of total upheaval, which will probably require them to move out of the house while it takes place.

FFS! I didn't say the easiest lol.
I've done dozens of retrofits... Including routing concrete slabs to accept the coils.

With a heat pump... Quick response is not feasible!
It's low and slow, not high and rapid!
That's the pit many fall into.

The rest of your post doesn’t make too much sense, but to answer this specific question, for our house:

Pre install around 20000kW gas and 3500kW electricity per year.

Post install around 9500kW electricity. No gas now. Induction hob.

Both of these equate to £220 ish per month cost wise on standard tariff (£225 vs £224).

Difference in comfort levels is like night and day- ASHP running continuously in colder months with weather comp is far superior. In fact I’d go as far to say that it’s probably the best home improvement we’ve done.

House- generally quite poorly insulated. EPC C but the assessment was inaccurate. States cavity wall insulation when there isn’t any and over estimates loft insulation. We do have 22mm primaries though with 15mm feeds to each rad (two pipe system), so the pipe infrastructure was ok.

Our design flow temp at -2 is around 48 degrees C.

We have subsequently installed a battery which takes advantage of cheaper rates. Investment around 7k but this saves us £900 a year so relatively quick pay back.

That’s our numbers, even with the stupidly high electricity tariffs in the uk vs gas currently- which one might assume has to change at some point.

Might have your elec tariff wrong, but my tariff is 6.6p off peak & 0.25p peak & 9500kw works out at £198pm if all on peak. With off peak & battery's a lot less. I'm with Good Energy. & they paid the £50 to move, plus no questions on how i use the electric. IE: Must have an EV for battery charging at night.

You are missing the standing charge from your calculations I believe.
