Hi,

I know that the use of fans at ceiling height blowing the hot air back down to ground level is an accepted way of reducing heating costs in commercial buildings.

I'm heating a small insulated greenhouse and thought about trying the same idea, but the running cost of even a small 20w fan is about £1 a week which seems steep compared to the £2 weeky cost of the electric heater.

Would be interested to know if in practice it is a realistic option in a small space.

Thanks

You are running a 40watt heater? there will be no heat to blow back down to ground level. You will be luck if it prevents frost, forget about any heat.

1 Week = 168 hours
168 x 20 watt = 3.36 Kw @ 12p/Kw = 40p per week running costs.

Might sound more attractive that way, but how much output is there from the heater. Does it throw out enough to spend 40p blowing it back down to the lower area?

Hi,

I'm running a 500w heater with a separate electronic thermostat .
Its only a section of the greenhouse 6 ft x 2ft x 7ft h so some 'layering' does occur.

While an even temp all over would be desirable is it worth a £1 a week extra as I cannot see it affecting the overall heat loss.

Edit - Yes, Dave you are right - somehow got my calculations wrong - damm that Guiness...
Even less than 40p with my tarrif being 9.37p after the first 200 at 15p
