Every so often our heating goes off for no apparent reason. If I lift the floorboard and put my hand down to a small metal box, I can lift a lever and the heating goes back on. I'm sorry I don't know what the box is called. It can work fine for weeks then suddenly go off. Can anyone help please?

it probably just needs the synchron motor replacing
Its an easy diy job to change the motor & cheap. So you will need to move floor boards, the plumber must of had them up.
Disconnect from electrics.
Do a bit of reading, there is a youtube video.
I changed mine.

If you can:
- turn off the power to the heating system.
- test for no power at the motorised valve.
- remove the head to check spindle on valve (still connected to pipework) can move easily by hand and to give more access to change the motor, usually two screws to undo to remove the head (metal box shown in the above picture).
- remove the motor.
- cut the two wires close to the motor.
- bare the cut wires.
- join one wire from the new motor to any of the cut and bared wires on the head, repeat to join remaining two wires. Usually a motor comes with two crimp connectors.
- fit new motor to the head.
- reassemble head to valve.
- re-instate power.
- test heat goes to hot water only first.
- turn off demand for hot water and test heating on its own.
- replace floorboard.
Then you should be ok, it's a straight forward job to do.
