Ive never looked into central heating in detail before but moved into a new house a few months ago and ,after the summer break, have a heating problem. I think it is elsewhere rather than the boiler.

I have turned thermostat up high to test (24+) The Hot water works on timer or on manual fine. On timer, the boiler works normally but only water gets hot. If I turn the water off on programming box and only the heating on, the boiler gets a flashing blue light. If I reset the boiler using the temperature dial, the light stops flashing, the boiler clicks several times for about 20 seconds and then starts flashing again.

Having read around on the web, I have turned my diverter valve to manual. This has fixed the heating problem and the radiators now get warm. Turning the thermostat down behaves as expected and turns off the burner on the boiler.

Does this mean it is definitely the valve or could it still be other possibilities (programming box, cylinder thermostat?) Are there Any other tests I could do before calling anyone out?

Sounds like the synchron motor has gone so not moving the valve when heating is called for.
Very common.
