I have installed a radiator in the loft which is the same level, if not then slightly above the header tank. For the heating to work i must switch it on, so that the pump will pump water to this radiator. But i must bleed it too before it works. When i switch it off then the loft rad drains and i have to repeat the process again. The header tank overflows too. Do i need to fit the header tank above the rad, or is there another way ? It is not a combi boiler, but the old style.

Raise the tank 18 inches minimum above the highest point on the heating system. dont forget to raise the vent pipe too! Water finds it own level remember which is why you are having the problems you are!

The pump is there to circulate water not move it to place's it couldn't otherwise get to if that makes sense.

Usually the F&E tank has to be a minimum of 1M above the highest point in your heating system.

What you have done often needs the heating system changed to a sealed system if the boiler can take it.
