Help! Can't remove old taps from wall.

Final (hopefully) question. Any suggestions on what I need to get so my new tap will extend far enough into the wall? As you can see in the photo, the old and new are quite different lengths. The shower tapes had little extenders on them that I reused, but this is all one piece. I am being lazy asking now - I can ask at the hardware store tomorrow.
