It's been decided our current boiler is not worth reparing so I'm looking for some recommendations on a replacement.

The current boiler is an 'Ideal W RS450', 14KW, open vented system.

Capacity wise it is more than ample. Due to it's position, any replacement can't be fitted more than 18inches lower and it would be ideal if I could make use of the existing hole-thru-the-wall for the replacement flue outlet, so a unit with a rear-flu outlet, like the current one, would be preferred rather than a top or side outlet.

Am I looking for a 'heat-only' or 'system' boiler?

I think an Ideal Classic HE15 sounds like a good match, but no idea how they compare to other brands/models.

Does the flue go into your garden or a neighbours as pluming may be an issue. Why not call someone in to give you some quotes as blr may need to be moved

It depends on what you're using it to heat. If it's just your CH then a heat only will do, but if you also have a water cylinder you'll need some extra components to get a heat-only boiler to heat both CH and hot water independently.

A system boiler is usually designed to work on a closed circuit therefore some mods to your pipework would be needed.

From what I've read on here what boiler to choose depends on the fitter, i.e. what they've worked with in the past and feel comfortable with but there are loads of threads relating to this.

As always I would go for a Vaillant Ecotec Plus 415 or 615, using the 15Kw you have stated.
