oops and forgot to say - there's never been any sinks etc on the kitchen side of the damp wall - just bare wall. and anyway, the damp is much worse on the sitting room side of the wall than the kitchen side.
what i really don't understand is why its so concentrated in one bit of the sitting room wall - about 3 foot wide (out of a 12foot wide wall), 1 metre high. but maybe that's not unusual with damp?
