Hi guys. Urgent request for help here.

Im finally ready to finish my roof. Just need to redo the verge with cement and done. I mixed 1 sharp sand, 2 building sand and 1 cement with water but simply couldn't get the consistency I wanted. I tried 3 or 4 batches and couldn't get it right. In the end up I thought maybe I was being to picky about it.

After trying to do 3 verge tiles I've realised maybe this isn't the right mixture and a much harder job than I initially thought.

Should I scrape it out and try again at a later date? Can I point this up from here and continue throughout the week as time is my major factor here.

Please help I'd really appreciate it, I won't be able to finish this tonight, I thought it wouldn't take me so long!

It doesn’t look bad imo. You probably just need to wait for it to dry. What exactly are you not happy with?

Thanks for the quick reply. I've been trying to complete this for weeks and I knew the mix wasn't right and did it anyway now I regret it.

My biggest fear is I can't finish it tonight as I messed around so much trying to make the perfect batch and I think your supposed to complete it all in one to if I'm right in thinking? Or can I do this over the course of a couple of days?

Get a damp sponge and wipe lightly along it a couple of times if need be to smooth off your trowelling, this can be followed with a light brushing with a soft brush if you want to bring out the sharp sand flints as show finish

Here is mine done last year when all the stuff put in originally by the builder started to fall out (just sand and cement and probably dried out to much before it was put in)

Thanks guys. I feel like I can finish it but just not by tonight and I wasn't sure if I would be able to mix on the hardened cement with new fresh cement.

So it's OK to continue tomorrow evening after work and try complete the rest of it?

If you mean put fresh mortar over the existing no, but if you mean carrying on where you left of yesterday. If you need to put fresh on the existing rake it out to a 20mm depth first.

It should be pointed in the same mortar as the bed. If you want to try later then you'll need to rake it out before it's too hard set. Tbh I'd be more worried about lack of overhang

Ye I've been told I have a lack of overhang. Not too sure how I'd fix it personally so I was going to cement this up and leave it for a year or 2 so I can relax as this was a mammoth job for me and then pay someone professional to do it lol. The reason I did the refelt and dry ridge was to try and keep it in fairly good condition and have it professionally done when I can afford it, as I can't right now.

Is lack of overhang a huge deal?

Im going to carry on from where I left off tomorrow, worst case just rake a little out and continue on. The damp sponge trick worked a treat thank you!

Here's a picture, apologies its not great.

Apologies double post. I didn't rebed the ridges I just installed a dry ridge and I'm going to do mortar on the end of the tile

Overhang of actual wall looks good so not something I would worry to much about, facia may eventually rot but keep on top of painting/maintaining it and it will be ok for a good few years

If you can't rub it up tonight do 1st thing in the morning with a slightly wetter sponge it will look a lot better than what you have

And report back on finished product , all waiting with baited breath

Of course it's to worry about ..what a load of twaddle. Nearly as bad as smudge it up with a sponge .. the guys trying to do it right and be encouraged
