I've got a door that I've painted with a stain varnish and I now want to get back to bare wood and repaint with just a varnish. Will the door sand down or will the stain have penertrated too far? And its got a rebate as part of the door face which will be difficult to sand down in? Any suggestions please!

It'd take a LOt of sanding to get back to bare wood & by then it will be too thin
If it was a water-based stain/varnish it may not have penetrated so deep ...Still a long job though

 It is a water based stain/varnish which gives me a little more hope. Whats the best sander to do the job?

A nightmare of a job, how much is a new door ?
These are quite expesive I think! I sanded a bit with a mini mouse sander and most of the stain came out but left the grain slightly stained?? The doors not that old and only painted one side!
