Cheers. I assumed that but then when I measured the waste pipe that I have at home that I know is 40mm, the outside diameter was 40.5mm, so it made me question it. Thanks.

Maybe that's how they did it back in the day? There must be some precedent? I can't believe that someone came up with that from scratch.

No, completely wrong way of doing it and made up on the spot.

It's an overflow pipe ,it is supposed to go externally ,partly so the escaping water can't do any damage, mostly to alert you that water is being lost and unnecessarily wasted. If I remember correctly there is a regulation to this affect. I can assure you it is a total ,and unnecessary bodge.

Hardly. Hole in waste pipe, stick overflow bend in, silicone it up, bish bash bosh, two minute job.
