Could there be any confusion about this?
Either that or the live feed to the switch has gone open circuit at the fitting or the live feed to the fitting has gone open circuit upstream.

Cable snapped off inside the switch box but not broken the pvc? I've seen that more than once or twice when switches have been going on and off with oldish cable
