I have just replaced our bathroom ceiling with a nice new one. Only trouble is that now when I go to sort the electrics I'm having a problem.

Originally there was a centre light that had a 3 gang connector block inside. In this block were wired the cable from the bathroom pull light switch, cable from my bedroom, cable from my daughters room and cable from a pull switch that turned on the ceiling extractor fan over the shower cubicle (this extractor only turned on when the bathroom lights were on)
From what I can remember all the reds went in one connector, all the blacks in another and all earths in another.
Trouble is I have wired the connector block like this but keeps flicking the RCD everytime I turn the power on so I must have got it wrong.
Please has anyone got any ideas???

Any help greatly appreciated

the cable from the pull switch is a live and switch wire not live and neutral lokk at the wiki for loop in lights wiring

Sorry wiring is not my forte..............I need an explanation in plain basic english.....i.e. where to put each colour from each electric item......sorry just a bit dense

first off all identify which cable goes to pull switch then put all your earths in with earth from light. then put all your lives either red or brown in colour in a choc block. put your black or brown (switch wire) of your pull switch cable in with live of light then your remaining two blacks or blue in neutral of light!!!
hey presto!!!!
go get pat on back offthe wife!!!

is in new colours but you can see one blue wire from switch is line not neutral and one would hope this wire would have a sleeve on it.

You can always use the search facility to look this up: threads explaining this kind of fault you have created are littering the site!

if you can identify which cable is which ( since you list where they come from presumably you can.. )

4 terminal blocks
earth = bare copper wire sleeved green/yellow

cable from bedroom

red - 1
earth - 3
black - 4

cable from daughters room

red - 1
earth - 3
black - 4

cable from light switch

red - 1
black sleeved red - 2
earth - 3

cable from extractor fan

if it's a red/yellow/blue cable...

red - 1
yellow ( sleeved red ) - 2
earth - 3
blue ( sleeved black ) - 4

if it's a red/black cable...

red - 2 - this will operate as described and only come on with the light..
earth - 3
black - 4

Yeah

As long as one of them three things isn't wiring lights or anything electrical come to think of it.

In future try looking properly at how the wires were connected originally, and write it down. Before messing about with them! They couldn't possibly have been connected how you described above :)
