Hi everyone please help i have a vokera linear 24 boiler which keeps locking out on code 3 which is according to manual a fan flue prob. Flue seems clear to me and to check fan (not sure if this is good idea) but i took the front cover off so i could see it and fired up the hot water and fan comes on fine although did seem a bit noisy. Here is the strange thing tho the flame stayed on didnt lock out so i kept it on and put front cover back on and within 3 seconds it cuts out then if i take cover back off it fires straight up again. Is this indicating the fans not working properly? When i take cover off is it letting funds escape out there which fan is not removing as it should. Please help we are freezing and thanks in advance

Thanks for the reply ive checked for blockages and cant see any. If the fan is not working as it should would this cause it to but out in this way. maybe the bearings are shot which could explain the noise it makes at times.

Combustion/safety work like this should be done by a gas registered engineer.

It may well be the fan but can also be other reasons. Operating the boiler with the cover off is very dangerous!

Even a gas registered person was gassed by CO while at work three weeks ago!

Thanks and yes i literally only had cover off for a minute just so i could see if fan was working i wouldnt use it like that. Also on another thread someone having what sounds like identical prob to me was advised it was prob a dirty aps or venturi. What are these exactly and are they easy to clean.

It may well be a fan/aps/venturi fault, but depending on the type may also be flue related.I'm not going to elaborate more on that but this is work for a professional.

Why?

I'm not trying to challenge your professionalism (45 years of it, I guess from your name!) but I'm genuinely interested to know why an intelligent amateur should not attempt to clean or perform simple repairs to a modern boiler. Intelligence would mean they would never attempt to alter a setting, which required a specialised instrument to calibrate but a certain amount of dismantling and reassembly ought to be possible, surely?

I ask because we had a Glow Worm installed and quite soon afterwards it started "hard" igniting. The technician came and proceeded to tear out the entire ignition system and replace it with new. The bloke had his head right up his arse and when I offered him a brew as I always do when people come to my house, he snapped "I'm too busy for that." When I asked him if he ever tried to diagnose a problem he snapped the same reply again. I had a strong feeling that he was out of the same mould as the dealer who sold me my car - never try to diagnose a problem but keep throwing new parts at it in the hope of achieving a cure. If this is the case then I can see how the industry would want to create a mystique of technical complication around their product, to protect their income from sales of spares and servicing.

I would add that I am not an electrical engineer or a plumber so I would not delve into my boiler, especially as I might cause expensive damage or void the warranty but supposing I was an electrical engineer with a clear understanding of the workings of boiler controls?

I must admit i would never want to do anything dangerous but do think im quite competent because of previous probs with boiler. In past ive changed the thermistors, flow diaphram, dhw heat exchanger de scaled the main heat exchanger and i have removed the fan ok. Its just id never heard of those two parts before and just wondered if it was something i could do myself as pennys are a bit tight at the mo. But thanks again for the help do appreciate it

because being dead isnt good

That's a really unhelpful reply; can't you see how that gives the impression that you're just trying to create hysteria?

I agree that there are some prize idiots around and that standards are needed to protect the public from these idiots. But what about a considered reply to my question?

(I remember as a student asking my landlord Mr Singh if we could have a heater for the bedroom over the passage. "Yes" he replied, "I'll get you an electric heater." "But Mr Singh there's no socket in that bedroom!" said I. "No problem," he replied, "I'll plug it into the light!")

Because there are various laws to protect people from unqualified people having a go.

Gas is one of them! Only people who are competent should work on gas or combustion related problems in boilers. That includes opening the combustion chamber!

Its one of the forum rules, and quite rightly so, that we do not give advice on gas related matters which could be used to enable a DIYer to try to do something which he is not qualified or competent to do.

As in all professions there are some people who are not very good and boiler fault finding is probably one of the aspects where this is most prevalent.

Look guys dont want to intrude but is it poss to get back to my orig question here ie my boiler prob. At the end of the day i am right now at work operating a machine which is far more likely to kill me than me cleaning the fan on my boiler. The bottom line is my family is cold times are hard and as im not a complete idiot i thought if its not too difficult i could fix it myself to save money. Just as i have at times in the past with this boiler and try to do when my car breaks. So venturi anyone? Is it the thing with the two pipes coming out of it going to the flue? Come on chaps throw me a bone here

We dont give advice on gas or combustion related matters!

If the machine at your workplace has any chance at all of killing you then you should report it immediately to the HSE and the Union.

Im in a workshop most machines in here could kill or seriously injure me if i didnt operate them correctly i was just trying to show my competence to do the more basic things on my boiler such as cleaning something if thats all that was needed. But look i really dont want to have a go at anyone and can totally appreciate you would never want to give me advice then find ive blown my house up. So thanks anyway my friend. But...... That venturi Still bugging me like crazy its like finding the holy grail. I know you want to tell me as well dont you eh eh

It's illegal to do part P electrics but there are literally hundreds of posts dealing with such matters in the Electrical Forum. Why is that Tony?
