Hi ,just removing the tiles in the bathroom in my new house. What is this type of adhesive under the tiles? It has a crumbly consistency and is only under some of the tiles. The rest of the tiles have the standard white adhesive.

Thanks in advance DSC_0003.JPG

cant remember what its called, but done many a shower/ablution rooms where i work and that stuff has been lingering behind it,ITS A RIGHT P.I.A to remove and the only way ive managed to to it is using a still filler knife and start by jabing it then like using a chisel try and push it off,oh and resharpen the edge of the knife regularly.

i normally just smash the tiles all off then do as ive said above.

Hi there, many thanks. I was concerned it may contain asbestos? So its perfectly safe to remove myself?
Good job the bathroom is tiny!

to be honest i have no idea?but wouldnt of thought so,as you can even pick it off with your fingers.
did even consider using a sander before but would think it would be extremely dusty.
so as said chip it off manually.

Never known of a tile adhesive that contains asbestos. What purpose would it serve?

Looks like crappy ready mix rubbish to me.

Yeah your right,it basically crumbled away today when I finished smashing the tiles off.
On a seperate subject I have removed the vinyl floor tiles also today, they were on a hardboard underlay. Am now panicking they may have contained asbestos,no dust was created during removal .

What's done is done now, to ease your mind though, even if they did contain asbestos, you'd have to practically eat them to release any fibres.

I have scoured the internet for peace of mind, most people are saying the tiles are non friable...and to pose a major hazard you would have to grind them into a dust to release the fibres!
