Help Please :)

We removed old artex plaster and were expecting brickwork beneath.

Instead, we found black gravel stuff (please see the photo on our profile)

Does anyone know what it is?

Can it be plastered straight on to?

I guess what you are seeing here are blocks made with a high content of fly ash - effectively coal furnace waste which found itself commonly being used in buildings just after the war.
It isn't the most pleasant of materials, but can be plastered over without any problems.
