I have a Potterton 80 Combi. My water will heat up but the central heating wont. I have looked inside at the Modulation Control Board and there is a dark patch of soot above one of the small fuse type plugs. Also this particular fuse type plug, it is black on the righthand side rather than bronse like the left hand side. I have explained this to the gas boiler man who is taking his time to come and look at it. But he says he has to see it first before he can make a decision as to whether I am correct or not as to the Modulation Control Board not working properly. This is all very well but I am freezing. He was not able to come yesterday and is coming today at around 5 but he says that if it is a part, it could be anything up to a week or more before the part is received and then its getting the time to fit it...... erm - I will die of hypothermia by then! Does everyone have this problem with tradesmen? Is there anything I can do? I rent the property and its the agent who deals with all this. The timeframe is crazy, especially when I have described what I can see has blown. Any help please..... please. :x  :(

If its the PCB which is failed then thats a common failure point and the parts are normally available off the shelf for collection. We keep about 20 in stock!

I assume you dont have a dripping hot tap as that would prevent the heating from working.

As a tenant you expect that you will be able to use the heating when its cold and if they do not repair it within 48 hours then you should ask the Agent to provide temporary electric heaters. Or just go an buy one today!

Thanks for that. I have been in touch with the agent who have spoken to the gas boiler people who are coming later today. They said that if "it" cant be mended (which I doubt they can) tonight they cant provide heaters as someone else has them but the agent said they will provide some tomorrow morning (when I am not there haha). The gas boiler people were so vague on ordering parts but he did say he would check but I have no faith in them at all now. Is there any way I can get the heating to work? No dripping hot tap. Thanks :(

The gas boiler engineer came along and says its the display case or the modulator - what on earth is the display case? and why does he not know which? Strange

A display case is something in a shop to display watches etc.

Nothing in a boiler.

Where did he hitch up his horse?

Any competent engineer would diagnose the fault and repair it! We carry the three Puma PCBs with us so we can do an immediate repair on the same visit.

It's correctly called the 'display board' however...

You need a modulation board!

Part No. 21/18601 Modulation control board 80e,100e
