My JVC midi hi fi is suddenly not behaving itself - when you switch it on the volume comes on maximum and its not possible to turn the volume down - is this an easy replacement parts fix or does it mean end of the road for the item ?

Define "easy"

Something giving out all of a sudden could indicate a blown component (resistor) or a failed transistor, or possibly a capacitor that's no longer holding charge properly. So task 1 is to find it. You'll need to be able to work your way around the circuit board to get to the general area involved with volume control, so that means some disassembly and then working on live circuits. If this sounds like it's all getting a bit complicated then you have your answer.

If you're prepared to carry on then next I'd have a look at the type of components you're dealing with. If there's lots of surfacemount stuff then you really want to think about whether it's worth going forward. Dealing with these tiny components means some specialist tools and skills.

Thanks for that Lucid - don't think I will go down the road of a repair myself - ironically I switched the unit off at the wall switch - left it unplugged for an hour or so, switched it on again and its working perfectly - seems strange that it should default to max volume when all the components appear to be functoning perfectly - thanks for your help
