Help with identifying this.

Hi,
I wonder if you could look at the photo and just tell me what this ceiling feature will be made of. It does not sound like brick when tapped and also will it be tied into the wall. I am having the whole ceiling replaced from lat and plaster as it's all cracking and will be reomving this. Not bothered about damaging it as it wont be going back up. Just wondered if its a hard job to remove.

Probably made of plaster of paris maybe? Personally , I'd leave it up. It's certainly an original feature of the house

The top part will probably be a lintel, the ornamental pieces are plaster mouldings/corbels.
