I'm looking to replace rotten wooden balcony components with similar wood. I'm not sure what the original wood is though, it appears to have no knots, is an orange / brown colour if I scrape though the surface (which has gone grey where the varnish has flaked off). Also, has a nice straight grain.

Built in the mid 80's. Any ideas on what I should use?

The sizes used are a mix of 100 x 75 and 75 x 75.

Bit arkward to say just from your description , a piccy would help.
If I had to hazard a guess I'd say it's what I term SAS or "Some African Stuff " ( well actually the third word is different, still begins with the S but would have been replaced by **** ) and could be a number of different species. Might be best to cut a piece out and take it to a local timber merchants to see if they can match it up. Alternative is to go with a contrasting wood if that's possible.

is it a supported balcony [with legs] or a cantilever into the building
are any structural components affected that you know off

It is a supported balcony. Some rot at the bottom of the corner support posts where they meet the concrete footings but the rest of the structural stuff appears OK. Most of the rotten wood is the railings and decorative pieces.

As Ladylola suggests you could take a piece to a good timber merchants for matching but I would suggest that it is most likely Hemlock or possibly Chestnut or Parana Pine.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Does anyone knows a good timber merchant in London I could try? (pref East London but will travel for a good one)
