Considering an RCBO only disconnects the live, is it still suitable to use one as additional protection on a shower circuit?

Yes, the only place I think it isn't suitable is to feed ceeform sockets for caravans (need a DP RCD)
 
Speaking of RCBO's, I was in a wholesalers last week chatting to the guy behind the counter. "You must be selling loads of these" I asked. "You're the first mate" was his answer. Claimed he wasn't selling too many dual RCD boards too. Wonder how many sparks are still working to the 16th.
 
It's not that we're not fitting RCBOs, we're just buying them on ebay for half the price!

how do you verify their authenticity, ie that they're not cheap fake knockoffs?

I guess given the testable nature & requirements of RCD devices correct operation can be more easily verified than MCB's, but the fakes issue still remains, and would make me uncomfortable, and possibly not legal. (No tracing of quality standards)
