theres lots f info on the net about this, iirc they are illegal unless they have a self washing facility, but i could be wrong so do check.

you can put them on and pass an MOT but as your car wont pass the construction and use regs regarding HID's a copper could stop you and give you a fine or something.

i wouldnt bother with HID's on an escort. the headlight isnt a projector and because the HID burner (bulb) gives out light in a different way to a normal bulb the light will scatter badly and is unlikely to be focussed well.

it will annoy other drivers like me and i just put my full beam on to **** them off too. also unless you go for the very white temperature burners you will look like a complete cock with your blue lights.

if you want better headlights rather than just trying to look cool you would be far better off upgrading your headlight wiring to handle more current and putting some very bright halogens in.

hi, thanks for replies, it was the law side of things that i was intrested in , as you said nickso about self cleaning /thats the bit ive picked up since fitting them
what happend is i fitted morrette quad lights to replace the ford fitted ones,
which i then had the garage alighn with there light meter thing so all ok .
then i got the idea to upgrade to fit the hid kit,
but firstly i used my local aldi wall to mark where my main beams were pointing, then i swapped to the hid lights and done a check on the wall again, and they looked spot on.
this was all done a month ago, and while night driving ive not had any bad reaction from oncoming cars so apart from paying another £45 to get em checked again im happy as they are.
its the law side of it im now worried about i dont want to pick up a fixed fine or somat if you see what i mean. cheers.r.r.

you would have to be unlucky to get caught out by the coppers IMO. they may stop you if they think they are too blue or if they are badly focussed, you seem to have done your homework so i wouldnt worry about it.

ive been running HID's on my BMW for almost 2 years now and never had a problem either, i figure the worst that will happen is a copper giving me a producer and telling me to go back to H1's or perhaps a small fine. i dont think ill get caught out though as the BMW has projectors as standard and the do a very good job of focussing the HID light.

Must look like an Audi now. They have damn bright & irritating lights. :D

The law is that

HIDS should only be in headlights made for HIDS
They need a washer system to keep them clean
They also need a self levelling system

I've had a few friends fail the MOT for their HIDS with places that they normally pass

thanks for your replys ,i was well pleased with them till i heard they might cause me legal problems, and as i said they shine where they should otherwise not much point upgrading them is there
so i will go on my merry way, if i do get stopped by old bill i will give an update on here and let you know. thanks again .r.r.
ps, this escort aint ready for knackers yard yet fredy :)

thanks mathew ,just spotted your reply so the law is against me ,anyway i will push on with em, maybe change bulbs over b4 mot to be safe if i have,nt been pulled by old bill b4 then . r.r.

change bulbs over? you cant. because HID requires driver units (ballast). To fit standard bulbs onto these drivers would damage both. You'd need to remove the ballasts and re-instate the old wiring.

Unless . . . you have "fake HIDs", which are just bluey bulbs. Real HIDs require ignitor and ballast, and have a good 5 second warm up.

thats the construction and use regs, they have no bearing on an MOT and a car with properly focussed and levelled HID's should pass an MOT. thats straight from the mouth of a VOSA inspector.

nope its entirely possible.

most HID retro kits just plug into the existing loom as they dont use any more current than the original lights. my own ones can be swapped back to H1's in around 30 seconds a side as all i need to do is remove the HID burner and replace it with an H1 and unplug the loom from the ballast back into the headlamp socket.
