I going to decorate my landing but I have cables running along one of the door frames. I was told I could scrape a hole and sink the cables into the wall/ door frame and wall paper over the top. Is this correct and if so any advice how to or not do this.

Nah it's probably not ok unless the wires will be in a corner and sounds as though you've got dodgy wiring. Have a look at the Howto/wiki in the electrics section for 'zones' where cables are allowed to be hidden in walls. Or ask the same question in the 'Electrics UK' forum.
